This  identity of the woman gardening has been variously identified - depending on the date ascribed to it - as showing either  Evelyn Dunbar (whom Mahoney courted in the mid to late 30's) or Dorothy Bishop (whom Mahoney married in 1941).  The setting is Oak Cottage, Wrotham Kent, where Mahoney lived from 1937 onwards.

A study for this composition is in the collection of The National Garden Museum.
