The writer Dr Alexander Irvine sat for Luke in 1938 on a visit to his native city from his home in America. The English poet and collector Gordon Bottomley described the painting as “true to the best of all traditions for us Northerners – the Holbein, Clouet, Memlinc, Ingres heritage”. The painting is in the collection of NMNI.
